Significant Job Losses in Mexico Job Market

In April of this year, the labor market in Mexico experienced one of the largest job losses in over two decades, according to a report from the global human resources firm ManpowerGroup. During that month, 47,442 jobs were canceled, surpassing even the negative figures reported during the Covid-19 pandemic.

ManpowerGroup pointed out that this job loss in April represents the largest drop in formal positions in an April in the last 20 years, only behind the job closures that occurred during the 2020 health crisis and in April 2009.

Regarding the details of the job loss, Manpower indicated that temporary jobs were the most affected, with 48,807 fewer positions, marking the highest figure for an April in recent years. On the other hand, permanent positions added only 1,365, a clearly insufficient number to compensate for the losses of temporary employees.

Fernando Bermudez, Director of Institutional Relations at ManpowerGroup, mentioned that the second quarter of the year is traditionally the period with the least job creation in Mexico compared to the first and third quarters.

Concerning employment between January and April 2025, ManpowerGroup reported that, so far, the country has generated only 179,289 new formal job opportunities. This figure represents a significant challenge, as it does not even reach the historical minimum recorded in 2005, when 219,000 formal jobs were created in the same period.

For the second quarter of the year, the company estimates that up to 90,000 formal jobs could be generated and it is expected that by the end of 2025, between 200,000 and 350,000 job opportunities will open in Mexico.
