The Banco del Bienestar is currently facing a delay of at least four days in the payment of pensions for senior citizens due to a lack of funds. According to the former president of Condusef, Mario Di Costanzo, the federal government was unable to meet the timely deposit of pensions for approximately 12.4 million people. Beneficiaries of the program are supposed to receive six thousand two hundred pesos every two months, and the deposit was expected to be made since Friday, May 2, 2025.
Di Costanzo indicated that hundreds of senior citizens were waiting in line under the sun at the branches of Banco del Bienestar, only to receive the response that the money had not been deposited. Concern grew among beneficiaries as the days passed without receiving their pensions.
Regarding the reasons for the delays in payments, Mario Di Costanzo explained that it is due to poor financial planning and the allocation of insufficient resources for the program. He stated that, compared to previous years, the federal funds allocated to the Pension for the Well-being of Senior Citizens program have had very limited increases, which has caused difficulties in the operation of the program.
In light of this situation, it was reported in the morning conference of President Claudia Sheinbaum that payments for senior citizens’ pensions will begin on Wednesday, May 7, 2025. The deposits will be made gradually, starting with beneficiaries whose last names begin with the letters "A," "B," and "C," and ending with the letters "W," "X," "Y," and "Z" by the end of May.
