Mexican Peso Appreciates Amid Positive Comments

The Mexican peso appreciated by 0.28% against the US dollar, which fell to 19.61 pesos in interbank and international operations on Wednesday, May 7, 2025. This was in response to comments from US President Donald Trump, who described the USMCA as "effective"; the exchange rate in Mexico fluctuated between 19.46 and 19.67 pesos per dollar.

At banks and exchange houses, the free dollar reached a maximum of 20.79 pesos and a minimum of 19.70 pesos per green bill. Among banks, the dollar was sold more expensively at institutions such as Bank of America (20.79 pesos) and Monex (20.58 pesos), while it was cheaper at Grupo Financiero Multiva (19.70 pesos) and BBVA (19.87 pesos).

Gabriela Siller Pagaza, the Director of Economic Analysis at Grupo Financiero BASE, pointed out that the appreciation of the Mexican peso and the fall of the US dollar were due to Trump's positive comments about the USMCA and its possible renegotiation next year.

"This Wednesday, the peso strengthens against the dollar thanks to Donald Trump's encouraging comments on the USMCA," explained Siller Pagaza. She noted that the USMCA is scheduled to be reviewed in July 2026, and if approved, it would remain in effect for 16 years from that date.

During his meeting with the Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, Trump asserted that the trade agreement is beneficial for everyone and very effective, also indicating that it will be renegotiated soon.
