Mexico's Social Progress: National Growth Fails to Reduce Regional Inequality

Despite Mexico's social index rising from 58.6 to 65 points in a decade, the living standards gap between states has barely shrunk. Experts warn it could take up to 150 years to fully eliminate inequality.

Mexico has shown significant national progress in social development over the last decade. This is revealed by the Social Progress Index presented by the research organization '¿Cómo Vamos?'. According to the report, the country's overall score improved from 58.6 to 65 points between 2015 and 2024. However, despite this progress, the gap in living standards between different regions of the country has barely narrowed. Sofía Ramírez, the organization's director general, explained on the program 'Aristegui en Vivo' that the national progress has been insufficient to close the regional gaps. 'If we wanted to close it completely, it would take us 150 years,' she stated. She mentioned that the difference in quality of life between the states with the best and worst indicators decreased by only one percentage point in a decade. The study analyzes 48 indicators grouped into three categories: basic human needs, foundations of well-being, and opportunities.
