President Claudia Sheinbaum unveiled a chart showing Mexico as the world’s second lowest unemployment country at 2.7 %, just below Japan. The graphic draws on data from Datosmacro on the Spanish portal Expansión, which tracks macro‑economic indicators for over 180 nations.
Analysts warn that Mexico’s labour market faces two structural flaws: low female labour participation and high, persistent informal employment. According to INEGI, in the third quarter of 2023, male participation exceeded female by 29.3 percentage points, while informal employment stood at 55.4 %.
IMSS data indicate a modest recovery: the previous quarter added nearly 118,000 formal jobs, after losing 15,000 over three months, bringing the annual total to 108,000 new positions—contrast with 453,000 in the same period last year.
"Transformation yields results," Sheinbaum said.
Below Mexico, Germany sits at 3.8 %, followed by the Netherlands at 4 %, Australia at 4.3 % and the United States at 4.6 %. Japan tops the chart with 2.6 %.
