BanCoppel: Digitizing Money in Mexico and Combating Financial Myths

BanCoppel is becoming a key gateway to digitize money in Mexico. The bank has 16 million clients, 11 million of whom have downloaded the app and 6 million are active users making transactions monthly. BanCoppel provides access to digitize funds, which is crucial for the segment of the population that was previously unbanked. Carlos López-Moctezuma, the bank's director, debunks the myth that Mexicans are afraid of digital payments. He states that the bank does not charge for SPEI transfers, deposits at branches, withdrawals at ATMs or in the Multired network. This policy of free services has earned the bank the trust of its clients, leading to 150 billion pesos in deposits. However, López-Moctezuma notes that the quality of new clients seeking credit is not as good as before, as many are already indebted elsewhere. Despite this, the bank is successfully integrating new clients into the financial system: 400,000 people were added this year, with a goal of incorporating three million more by 2030. The growth in debit card usage at BanCoppel has reached 16%, significantly higher than the market average of 6%. To maintain an acceptable level of delinquency, the bank is more cautious with credit origination and employs a team of 10,000 collectors for client servicing.
