Mexico is considering the possibility of eventually exploiting non-conventional gas reserves, including those in the Burgos Basin region, adjacent to the fields in Texas, to reduce its dependence on gas imports. This was stated on Monday by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.
"Burgos is an option," Sheinbaum affirmed during her daily press conference in response to a question.
Currently, Mexico is focused on expanding renewable energies, reducing gas flaring, and exploiting conventional gas. The goal is to reduce gas imports, which are mainly used to supply the industry, from the current level of around 75 percent.
Sheinbaum highlighted the benefits of increasing refining capacity amidst global supply disruptions. Sheinbaum reported after a weekend visit to the facilities that the coking plant in Salina Cruz is 76 percent complete and will produce 80,000 barrels of fuel per day.
What is and where is the Burgos Basin?
The Burgos Basin is located in Coahuila, south of the Rio Grande. The Government of Mexico points out that the Burgos Basin is the country's most important reserve of natural gas—not directly associated with oil.
"In principle, it is basically located in the State of Tamaulipas, and it also extends into the northern zones of Nuevo León and Coahuila. The economic relevance of this region lies in that of the 652 wells drilled by Petróleos Mexicanos (PEMEX) for the production of this type of gas in 2003, 402 are in this basin," indicates a publication in the DOF.
The document also indicates that since 2003, the daily production of gas in the Burgos region has been increasing, which "translates into the generation of development poles within the populations where the activities are carried out, as well as job opportunities."
In addition to its natural gas reserves, the Burgos Basin region has varied wildlife and fishery resources. This is why an Ecological Reordering Program was issued for the region, currently published in the DOF. Likewise, the Burgos Basin is considered a strategic area due to its proximity to the border with the United States.
