Mexican Banks to Close for Two Days During Holy Week

In Mexico, banks will be closed for two days during Holy Week. The Mexican Banking Association (ABM) reported that this closure is in accordance with the financial sector's holiday calendar, which states that “banking institutions will suspend their operations to the public on Thursday, April 2 and Friday, April 3”. However, not everything comes to a standstill. Forget about going to the bank on these Holy Week days. Bank branches will be closed nationwide by official decree. Services will continue to operate through ATMs, banking correspondents, digital and telephone banking, which are available 24 hours a day. Where can I make payments? Even though traditional banks will remain closed, there are several alternative counters that will open and accept payments, deposits, withdrawals, and urgent transactions. To avoid delays, late payment interest or fees, and to complete your pending operations on Thursday, April 2 and Friday, April 3, the ABM recommends: Use the services offered by digital, electronic, and telephone banking, which operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Use your bank's app: it allows you to make transfers, deposits, payment of public services, and even report unrecognized charges and obtain security keys to buy or settle accounts online. Go to the 66,000 ATMs and cash machines nationwide, where you can make transfers, scan barcodes or QR codes, and settle your accounts or public service receipts in cash or with cards. You can also turn to the more than 60,000 banking correspondents: small stores, pharmacies, supermarkets, and commercial premises, where they accept payments for public services and cash withdrawals. Won't any bank be open? The Mexican Banking Association revealed that, for the peace of mind of thousands of customers, some branches will serve the public and offer usual banking services during Holy Thursday and Friday. It specified that – for these dates – banks that offer their services inside commercial warehouses and supermarkets will be open to the public during their traditional hours, even on non-working days. Am I doomed to pay interest? According to current legislation, if your payment deadline falls on April 2 and 3, 2026, you can make the payment until the following Monday, April 6 of the same month, without any penalty, fee, interest, or extra payment. “The Law for the Transparency and Ordering of Financial Services establishes that, in the event that the deadline for a payment corresponds to a non-working day, the payment can be made on the next business day,” concluded the ABM.
