The cost of the basic basket in our country is on the rise: The price of poblan chili skyrocketed 183 percent in one year, going from 21.2 to 60 pesos per kilogram. JalapeƱo chili doubled its price with a 132 percent increase, while serrano chili rose 68 percent, according to the National System of Information and Market Integration (SNIIM). In the case of the cucumber, its price doubled, going from 14 to 28 pesos per kilogram, while avocado increased 33 percent, from 15 to 20 pesos per kilo. Zucchini presented generalized increases of over 60 percent in different presentations, and even over 100 percent in some cases. This is added to increases in vegetables such as broccoli, with an increase close to 25 percent, and Swiss chard, which rose more than 20 percent between 2025 and 2026. In the fruit segment, although the behavior is mixed, there are products with significant increases: Guava registered an annual increase of 34 percent, while cantaloupe melon showed increases of over 25 percent. The salsas make you 'cry' because they are very spicy and also because of the price of the products you need to make them: The spike in inflation in Mexico in the last year caused a 200 percent increase in the cost of tomatoes and chilies. A price comparison at wholesale in the Central de Abastos in Mexico City, between the first week of April 2025 and the same period but this year, showed that the price of salad tomatoes increased up to 190 percent. In Sinaloa, the price per kilogram went from 10.32 to 30 pesos, while in Puebla it rose from 21.33 to 37.50 pesos, an increase close to 76 percent.
