Record Tax Collection in Mexico Amid Economic Growth

The Mexican Tax Administration Service (SAT) reports a historic increase in tax collection from various consumption goods, exceeding 30% from January to September 2024, driven by the Special Tax on Production and Services.


Record Tax Collection in Mexico Amid Economic Growth

The Tax Administration Service (SAT) reported that the collection from the Special Tax on Production and Services (IEPS) applied to gasoline, cigarettes, soft drinks, and alcoholic beverages had a record increase of more than 30% in the first nine months of 2024, reaching the figure of 449 billion 938 million pesos.

The IEPS collection recorded a growth of 30.8% compared to the same period of the previous year, which represented an additional amount of 121 billion 573 million pesos. Daily, the SAT collected around 1 billion 666 million pesos, which is 66.5 million per hour, from taxpayers obligated to pay this tax.

Regarding the general collection of the country, it reached 3 trillion 697 billion pesos between January and September 2024, representing a real increase of 5.3% compared to the same period of the previous year. The Income Tax (ISR) generated tax revenues of 2 trillion 38 billion 11 million pesos, showing an increase of 114 billion 865 million pesos, or 1.1% more than in 2023.

On the other hand, the Value Added Tax (IVA) contributed 1 trillion 38 billion 844 million pesos to public finances, reflecting a real increase of 4%. In the last six years, national collection has shown consistent growth, rising from 2 trillion 299 billion in 2018 to 3 trillion 687 billion in 2024.

In the words of the SAT: "Tax collection has made significant advances in recent years, reflecting taxpayer compliance with tax obligations, thus contributing to the strengthening of public finances."
