New Mexican Government Promises to Reduce Tortilla Prices

The Government of Mexico aims to reduce tortilla prices by 10% and achieve self-sufficiency in white corn and beans through a national agreement with producers.

New Mexican Government Promises to Reduce Tortilla Prices

The new Government of Mexico aims to reduce the price of the essential corn tortilla by 10%, announced the Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development, Julio Berdegué. This measure also seeks to achieve self-sufficiency in non-transgenic white corn and beans in the country.

To achieve this goal, the 'Harvesting Sovereignty' program will be implemented, which aims to increase the production of corn, beans, rice, milk, sorghum, onion, tomato, and chili. Non-transgenic white corn is fundamental in the diet and culture of Mexico, so efforts are being made to ensure its self-sufficiency.

Berdegué pointed out that Mexico imports about 300,000 tons of beans annually, prompting plans to cultivate 763,000 hectares with certified high-quality genetic seeds. For this purpose, a new 'Well-being Seed Producer' will be established in Zacatecas.

Additionally, the aim is to increase rice production to 250,000 tons per year and milk production to up to 10 liters daily per cow. Credits, marketing support, and social programs will be provided in 1,200 municipalities with poverty, where small and medium commercial agriculture is concentrated.

The Government will also continue with social programs such as 'Production for Well-being' and 'Fertilizers for Well-being', which benefit more than 2 million people each. A plan is promised to increase production with less environmental impact, considering that 75% of water in Mexico is allocated to agriculture.
