SCJN faces salary cuts due to austerity

At least 330 workers of the Court will face a salary reduction as part of the austerity measures implemented. The Supreme Court reported that this year it experienced the largest budget cut in the last decade, amounting to 321.9 million pesos, 5.3% less than requested. Despite this, the SCJN claims it has been able to expand its services thanks to austerity policies and spending containment.

The president of the SCJN, Minister Norma Piña, presented a project that was approved with eight votes in favor and three against. This project includes a reduction of 23.7% in real terms compared to what was allocated in 2018. Additionally, the risk pay for senior officials such as the General Secretary of Agreements, the General Secretary of the Presidency, coordinators, and general subsecretaries of agreements will be eliminated. A total of 4 billion 813 million pesos was requested to cover agreed remuneration and benefits in the current General Working Conditions.

The SCJN's 2025 budget project will be sent to the Ministry of Finance for inclusion in the Expenditure Budget of the Federation (PEF) 2025 before November 5. Subsequently, it will be discussed by the Legislative Power to determine the final amount allocated to federal agencies for the fiscal year 2025. Despite the reductions, the court ministers will maintain a payment of 639,917 pesos for the concept of risk.

The document states that eight out of every ten pesos of the budget will be allocated to cover personal services, an area considered key to achieving justice delivery objectives. The Plenary of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) approved the budget project for 2025, amounting to 5 billion 529 million 450 thousand gross pesos.
