Tourism Economy in Mexico Grows by 5.8%

In Q2 2024, Mexico's tourism economy grew by 5.8% year-on-year, driven by service and goods sectors. The National Institute of Statistics reports rising domestic tourism consumption.


Tourism Economy in Mexico Grows by 5.8%

According to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), the tourism-related economy in Mexico experienced a growth of 5.8% annually in the second quarter of 2024. This increase was mainly driven by tourism services and goods. The tourism Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increased due to a 7% rise in tourism services and a 1% increase in goods.

Inegi's report indicates that tourism consumption also showed a year-on-year growth of 1.9% between April and June 2024. In the domestic market, tourism consumption increased by 2.6%, while a decline of 2.5% was recorded in foreign tourist arrivals. Regarding Inegi's Quarterly Indicators of Tourism Activity (ITAT), a quarterly increase of 5.5% in the tourism economy was observed in the second quarter of the year compared to the same period in 2023.

On the other hand, tourism consumption had a quarterly increase of 1.6%, with a 2.5% increase in domestic tourists and a 3% decrease in foreign tourists. These figures show an upward trend in the tourism sector after the COVID-19 pandemic in Mexico. During 2023, Mexico received 42.15 million international tourists, representing a 10% increase compared to 2022.

In previous years, the tourism-related economy in Mexico grew by 5.5% in 2023 and 14.4% in 2022. In the first quarter of 2024, the country received 11.22 million international tourists, a 6.9% increase compared to the previous year. These tourists generated revenues of 9.172 billion dollars, representing a 9.5% increase. Mexico ranked as the sixth most visited country worldwide in 2022 and 2023, according to data provided by the World Tourism Organization.
