
In September last year, Mexico experienced a 13.5% increase in the arrival of international tourists compared to the same month the previous year, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi). During this month, the country received 3.31 million foreign tourists, up from 2.91 million recorded in September 2023.
The Inegi report reveals that the largest annual increase was observed in border tourists, which rose by 33.4% year-on-year to reach 1.85 million. In contrast, tourists arriving by air decreased by 6.4% to 1.21 million, while the rest accessed by land or on cruises.
The total spending of international tourists increased by 2.4% year-on-year in September, reaching 1,605.7 million dollars, although the average spending per tourist decreased by 9.8% year-on-year to 484.97 dollars in the same month.
During the year 2023, Mexico received a total of 42.15 million international tourists, representing a 10% increase compared to the previous year. Revenue from international visitors reached 28,682.6 million dollars, a nearly 9% increase from the previous year.
In the first quarter of 2024, the tourism-related economy in Mexico, measured as Tourist Gross Domestic Product (GDP), grew by 7.4% annually, driven mainly by tourism services and the influx of domestic tourists.
Mexico ranked sixth as one of the most visited countries in the world in 2022 and 2023, according to data from the World Tourism Organization, highlighting the sustained growth of this sector in the country.
