The 2025 Federal Expenditure Budget Project (PPEF) for UNAM was controversial for initially proposing a reduction in its budget allocation. The Ministry of Finance and Public Credit later clarified that it was a "regrettable error" and guaranteed an increase in line with inflation.
In the project presented to the Chamber of Deputies, a cut of 5,360.1 million pesos for UNAM was considered, a measure that the institution warned would directly affect 110 thousand scholarship beneficiaries. The Undersecretary of Expenditures reported that efforts are being made to correct this error and to comply with the instruction for a 3.5% increase over the previous year.
The government emphasized its commitment to education and highlighted the importance of supporting public institutions as pillars of social development in Mexico. UNAM, prior to the correction from the Ministry of Finance, expressed its concern about the impact that the budget reduction would have on quality higher education and its 110 thousand scholarship students.
The university underscored the need for sufficient resources to serve its 373 thousand students, maintain infrastructure, update academic programs, and promote research and cultural dissemination. The discrepancy between the initial proposal and the statements from President Sheinbaum generated uncertainty regarding the funding of autonomous educational institutions.
