Mexico Increases Budget for UNAM and IPN by 3.5%

The Ministry of Finance and Public Credit, led by Rogelio Ramírez de la O, has amended the Budget Project allocated to UNAM and the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) for the year 2025. Any cuts in spending for these two educational institutions of vital importance in Mexico have been ruled out.

In an official statement, the supposed "error" contained in the Federal Expenditure Budget (PEF) 2025 has been corrected, assuring that the spending allocated to both higher education institutions will increase by 3.5% compared to the current budgetary year.

"Due to a regrettable error, the budget assigned to the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the National Polytechnic Institute appeared reduced in the Federal Expenditure Budget presented today before the Congress of the Union," the official statement mentions.

The Ministry of Finance has affirmed that it is already in collaboration with the Budget Commission of the Chamber of Deputies to ensure that both educational institutions receive a 3.5% increase compared to the previous year, as instructed by the president at the time of its preparation.

It is specified that the expenditure on education included in the Federal Expenditure Budget 2025 will experience an increase of 11 billion 869 million pesos compared to the budgetary exercise of 2024.

In the Economic Package 2025 presented before the Congress of the Union, greater resources are allocated for the Wellness Universities, and the budget for UNAM, UAM, the Pedagogical University, and IPN is updated according to inflation.

The budget allocated to higher education in the PEF 2025 delivered to the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate is 101 billion 793 million 600 thousand pesos, in contrast to the 112 billion 61 million 600 thousand pesos considered for the previous year.

For UNAM, which had been assigned 50 billion 418.4 million pesos in the 2024 project, a 3.5% increase will be applied according to the inflation updated by SHCP. This same percentage increase will be applied to IPN.
