The Economic Package for the Fiscal Year 2025 includes a budget cut for several agencies, including the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena). This Saturday, the government of Claudia Sheinbaum presented the first annual budget for 2025, which includes a 1.9% reduction in public spending and a decrease in the deficit to 3.2% of the gross domestic product (GDP), after reaching almost 6% this year.
This report details the budget decrease for health, environment, security, and culture agencies. Specifically regarding the Sedena, one of the institutions that was strengthened during the previous administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, a budget cut of 43.8% is planned. Its budget for the next year will be 151 billion 995 million pesos, compared to the 270 billion 465 million pesos of the year 2024.
In addition to Sedena's tasks in support of public security, combating crime, and activating the DN-III-E Plan in cases of natural disasters, the institution has participated in public works projects. According to the Center for Research in Public Policy Mexicanos Primero, up to 2023, the Sedena was involved in 74 of its own public works projects and 367 from other institutions.
During the period from 2019 to 2023, the Secretariat participated in a total of 2,823 works, which represents a significant increase compared to the 851 works it was involved in between 2006 and 2018. Some of the projects in which the Sedena participated include the construction of sections of the Maya Train, branches of the Bank of Wellbeing, civil hospitals, as well as the construction and management of aqueducts from the National Water Commission (Conagua), and airports such as Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) and Chetumal.
