Controversy Surrounds 'Emilia Pérez' Ahead of Oscars

The film 'Emilia Pérez' directed by Jacques Audiard has begun to stand out in the awards season, being one of the critics' favorites. Despite the praise received for the cast's work, the movie has faced negative criticism, particularly for the alleged use of artificial intelligence.

During the Cannes Film Festival, sound mixer Cyril Holtz confirmed that an artificial intelligence program called Respeecheren was used to enhance vocal aspects of some characters, such as expanding the vocal range of Karla Sofía Gascón and adjusting the Spanish pronunciation of Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña.

In the midst of the controversy, various viewers have expressed their discontent, arguing that the performances of the main cast should not be recognized with awards if artificial intelligence resources were used. In response to the criticism, Jacques Audiard apologized to the Mexican public in an interview, emphasizing that 'Emilia Pérez' does not aim to be realistic and that his intention was not to offend the Mexican population.

The French director explained that he sees cinema as a means to raise questions rather than to provide answers, defending the film's approach despite the criticism. In his own words, "If I have to choose between truth and legend, I prefer legend."
