February is just around the corner and with it comes the first long weekend of 2025 for elementary education students, which also includes an additional day off for workers. On this occasion, preschool, primary, and secondary students will enjoy four days off starting January 31, according to the school calendar for the 2024-2025 school year set by the Ministry of Public Education (SEP).
Basic education schools will remain closed to allow teachers to hold the Technical School Council (CTE) meeting, as is customary at the end of each month, giving students a brief break. Additionally, the first Monday of February, marked as a mandatory rest day in the Federal Labor Law (LFT), provides another additional day without classes for students and a well-deserved break for workers.
Regarding February 3, the LFT establishes this day as a mandatory rest day in commemoration of Mexican Constitution Day, celebrated on February 5. Workers required to work that day will be entitled to receive extra pay according to the law. Article 75 of the LFT states that those who work on holidays will receive double pay for the service rendered, which means that next Monday, February 3, they will receive triple pay.
In addition to the February long weekend, there are other dates considered as days off according to the LFT for 2025, including the third Monday of March for the birthday of Benito Juárez, May 1 for Labor Day, September 16 for Independence Day, the third Monday of November for the Mexican Revolution, and December 25 for Christmas. Though not officially mentioned, 2025 may have an additional day off due to the election of ministers, judges, and magistrates scheduled for June.
