Every year, the inhabitants of Santiago Xalitzintla prepare to celebrate the birthday of the Popocatépetl volcano, known as 'Don Goyo Fest'. However, due to the recent volcanic activity, the State Police has restricted access to the slopes of the mountain on this occasion. Despite the roadblocks, the celebration continues, as the locals consider 'Don Goyo' as a protector who deserves respect.

This Wednesday, March 12th, marks the anniversary of 'Don Goyo', and despite the restrictions, the inhabitants of Santiago Xalitzintla carry out rituals and offerings in honor of the volcano. The celebration dates back to a legend of the town that has persisted to this day.

According to historical records, it is estimated that Popocatépetl is around 730 thousand years old, but its birthday is celebrated on March 12th in Santiago Xalitzintla, the community closest to the volcano. The legend recounts the story of a man who encounters another named Gregorio Chino Popocatépetl on the slopes of the mountain, which gave rise to the nickname 'Don Goyo'.

Despite the access restrictions imposed by the authorities due to volcanic activity, the residents of nearby communities gather to celebrate the iconic Mexican volcano on its special day. The celebration, which includes rituals and offerings, reflects the deep connection that exists between the local population and the majestic Popocatépetl.
