This weekend, a regrettable incident occurred in the Mexican sports scene during an athletic race in Tabasco. A man who finished in second place lashed out physically at the winner.
The situation unfolded during the race of section 44 of the Pemex Union last Sunday, March 16, in the city of Villahermosa. José Luis Casillas was the first to cross the finish line, and while celebrating his victory, José Alberto Balán, who finished in second place, felt aggrieved thinking that Casillas was mocking him.
Without exchanging words, Balán approached Casillas and landed a punch to his face that immediately knocked him to the ground, where he received kicks from his attacker until others intervened to stop the fight.
Although the exact reason that led Balán to act violently is still unknown, according to journalist Ignacio Ríos, there are three possible reasons: prior grievances between the parties involved, a supposed mockery during the race, or a shortcut taken by the winner.
The Pemex Union has not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident to clarify what happened. This deplorable episode has left a stain on the local sports scene of Tabasco and on the national sports environment, generating great concern among spectators and the sports community.
