Mexican Catamarans with Humanitarian Aid Arrive Safely in Cuba

The Secretariat of the Navy (Semar) reported this Saturday that the catamaran-type vessels ‘Friendship’ and ‘Tigermoth’ arrived and docked safely at the port of Havana, Cuba, after being located 80 nautical miles (149 kilometers) northwest of the island's capital. In a message on its X account, Semar confirmed that it maintained tracking and coordination with the authorities for the arrival of the two sailboats, which were carrying humanitarian aid for Cuba. Since Thursday, due to a loss of communication, they had been missing with a crew of nine people of different nationalities, including two women, six men, and a three-year-old minor. The military institution updated this information after announcing on Saturday morning the discovery of these two vessels, which had sailed from Isla Mujeres, near Cancun, on March 21 to transport the last shipment of the ‘Nuestra América’ convoy, a humanitarian initiative that has been providing aid to Cuba amid the U.S. oil blockade. According to national media, while Mexican authorities did not provide details on the crew's condition, they were found in good health. At her Friday press conference, President of Mexico Claudia Sheinbaum stated that the search and rescue operation was ongoing and informed that the crew members, who identified as activists, had lost communication at sea. According to the Mexican leader, one of the Navy's vessels monitored the route of a cargo ship that managed to arrive in Cuba, but the loss of contact was registered with the other two smaller vessels. These two sailboats were part of the convoy seeking to deliver aid amid the deterioration of Cuba's economic and energy crisis, one of the most severe in its history.
