Cold Front 24 has caused low temperatures in Guanajuato during this week, prompting authorities to issue alerts and recommendations for the population.
On the morning of Tuesday, January 22, the coldest day so far was recorded, with temperatures dropping to -3 °C in the municipalities of northeastern Guanajuato. In light of this situation, the Guanajuato Secretary of Education decided to suspend in-person classes as a precautionary measure.
The lowest temperatures have been reported in Xichú (-3 °C), followed by Atarjea, San Luis de la Paz, and Victoria (-2 °C), while San Diego de la Unión and San José Iturbide reached -1 °C. Temperatures are expected to range between -5 °C and 0 °C, with winds of up to 60 km/h and the possibility of dust storms, which could worsen the conditions.
The State Coordination of Civil Protection has issued recommendations to cope with the cold, including dressing warmly, protecting the vulnerable, avoiding indoor risks, staying hydrated, and reducing outdoor activities.
In some communities such as Atarjea, Doctor Mora, Santa Catarina, San Diego de la Unión, San José Iturbide, San Luis de la Paz, Victoria, and Xichú, frost has been recorded, raising alarms among authorities. Although there have been no reports of affected individuals or fatalities, temporary shelters have been activated in municipalities such as Santa Catarina, San Diego de la Unión, and Victoria to protect the most vulnerable families.
The National Meteorological Service has warned that cold front number 24 will maintain its influence until Friday, January 24. The population is advised to dress warmly and, in case of an emergency, to call 911.
