Historic Agreement on Reproductive Health in Mexico

A historic agreement by ISSSTE ensures legal abortion procedures are implemented with respect for human rights and comprehensive care from January 24. Training for medical staff is essential.

The Institute of Security and Social Services for State Workers (ISSSTE), under the direction of Martí Batres Guadarrama, has announced a historic agreement that will guarantee the application of the procedure for Legal Abortion (ILE) in its medical units starting Friday, January 24.

The new protocol establishes that all users have the right to receive medical attention based on the principles of equality, gender perspective, non-discrimination, and respect for Human, Sexual, and Reproductive Rights. It is emphasized that the ILE procedure will be carried out in a safe and conducive environment, with the informed consent of the user.

The agreement highlights the importance of not revictimizing those who have been victims of crimes, ensuring that medical personnel are trained to provide appropriate care. It includes the need to provide preventive guidance and emotional support, guaranteeing comprehensive and respectful service to each patient.

Furthermore, the need to protect reproductive autonomy is underscored, providing certainty to both health personnel and individuals seeking this service. Medical units are required to have sufficient health personnel who are not conscientious objectors to ensure the provision of the service.

The Medical Directorate of ISSSTE will be responsible for coordinating the training of medical personnel and ensuring the effective implementation of the agreement, while the Legal Directorate will be in charge of integrating the content into the Institutional Electronic Norm Library within five working days.

ISSSTE reaffirms its commitment to prioritize the physical, psychological, and social well-being of users during the ILE procedure, without any form of discrimination.

The agreement will be available for consultation in the ISSSTE Norm Library and in the Official Gazette of the Federation, thus providing transparency and accessibility to information for the entire population.
