The Secretariat of Health, under the administration of President Claudia Sheinbaum, has implemented the national strategy "See for Mexico" to address cataract blindness in the country. This condition affects 34% of blindness cases in Mexico, with 760,000 people currently suffering from it and 47,600 new diagnoses each year. The lack of access to surgery affects 1 in 3 patients due to economic limitations.
The strategy focuses on improving access to cataract surgery, especially for the most vulnerable sectors of the population. Since the beginning of Claudia Sheinbaum's term, efforts have been made to combat this condition, which is one of the main causes of vision loss in the country.
"See for Mexico" promotes more accessible and efficient care so that thousands of Mexicans can regain their vision, improving their independence and quality of life. It offers free surgery in all 32 federal entities, aimed at individuals over 60 years old with a cataract diagnosis. The complete process includes registration, evaluation, surgery, and ophthalmological follow-up.
The initiative represents a significant advancement in reducing cataract blindness in Mexico, benefiting thousands of people and their families through specialized and accessible medical care.
