New Clinical Guidelines to Combat Obesity in Mexico

The Mexican Society of Nutrition and Endocrinology has launched new clinical guidelines aimed at addressing obesity in adults, aligning with international standards and focusing on patient-centered care.

Emma Adriana Chávez Manzanera, coordinator of the Obesity Clinic of INCMNSZ, explained that the recently presented Clinical Practice Guidelines are aligned with international recommendations and focus on providing patient-centered care.

According to the OECD, Mexico is the second country with the highest obesity rates among its 38 members, affecting almost 40% of adults over 15 years old. Leonor G. Mireles Zavala, a clinical endocrinology specialist, highlighted that obesity is a chronic disease that goes beyond aesthetics, emphasizing the importance of the guidelines to address this issue.

The guidelines were presented by the Mexican Society of Nutrition and Endocrinology (SMNE) with the aim of improving medical care, promoting prevention, and personalizing treatments to combat obesity in the country. Hugo Laviada Molina, coordinator of the SMNE Obesity Working Group, highlighted the relevance of these guidelines for healthcare professionals.

Among the proposed goals are to strengthen the prevention and treatment of obesity, promote multidisciplinary teams, and enhance training and education in health systems.

The recommendations contained in the guidelines range from comprehensive patient evaluation, through medical-nutritional and psychological treatment, to options for pharmacotherapy and bariatric surgery when necessary.

The expected impact of implementing these guidelines is to reduce variability in medical care, improve clinical outcomes, and optimize the use of health resources. José Sifuentes Osornio, General Director of the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition Salvador Zubirán, emphasized the importance of addressing obesity and diabetes comprehensively and early.

In summary, the Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Management of Overweight and Obesity in Adults presented by the SMNE seek to provide an integrated and evidence-based response to the concerning increase of obesity among Mexican adults.
