At the end of April 2023, a baby named Jesse underwent in-utero surgery to treat spina bifida. At that time, Jesse's mother was 25 weeks pregnant.
Spina bifida is a serious congenital defect in which the spinal cord and the membranes covering it do not develop properly. In-utero surgery is a delicate procedure that involves operating on the fetus inside the mother's womb.
According to the doctors who performed the surgery, the intervention was a success and both the mother and the baby are recovering well. Jesse was born a few weeks after the operation and, so far, is progressing satisfactorily.
"We are very grateful to the medical team that carried out the surgery. Thanks to their dedication and skill, Jesse has the opportunity for a healthier life," said Jesse's mother in a recent statement.
