Mexico Launches Free Cataract Surgery Program

The Mexican government presented this Saturday, January 25, 2025, the "See for Mexico" program, a national initiative aimed at providing free cataract surgeries to citizens over 60 years old across the country. The main objective of the strategy is to reduce blindness caused by cataracts, one of the leading causes of reversible blindness in Mexico.

Cataracts account for 34% of the cases of blindness in Mexico, affecting around 760,000 people, with 47,000 new cases each year. However, one in three patients lacks access to surgery due to economic problems, exacerbating the situation.

The "See for Mexico" program offers a comprehensive approach to this issue, providing free surgeries and covering the entire process, including registration, medical evaluation, surgical intervention, and ophthalmological follow-up. These operations will be carried out in all federal entities of the country, benefiting thousands of people who otherwise could not access this specialized treatment.

Access to the program is easy and free for all interested individuals. Patients can register on the cataracts.atdt.gob.mx portal, entering their information and receiving a medical assessment to determine if they require surgery. The strategy is specifically aimed at people over 60 years old with a confirmed diagnosis of cataracts.

Cataract surgery, being reversible, has a significant impact on the quality of life of Mexicans, allowing them to regain their vision and, consequently, their independence. With this initiative, the government seeks to decrease blindness resulting from cataracts and ensure that seniors can enjoy an active and fulfilling life.

This measure also responds to the commitment to ensure equality in access to healthcare, bringing medical services to all regions of the country, including those more remote areas where patients often lack access to specialized treatments.
