Nuevo León Prepares for Migrant Flow

The Secretary of Equality and Inclusion, Martha Herrera, stated that the state of Nuevo León is not in crisis regarding migration issues and that there is no knowledge of any person being repatriated through the Colombia customs who has entered the state. She explained that measures are being implemented to promote initiatives from migrant shelters and civil society to improve humanitarian assistance for those arriving in the region.

Herrera mentioned that the state has established infrastructure, including shelters from DIF and civil organizations, as well as the construction of a new shelter in collaboration with the federal government in case the arrival of migrants increases. Approximately 100,000 people pass through Nuevo León annually, and about 10,000 request asylum over a period of five years, which is considered a normal flow so far.

Collaborative efforts are being made with migrant shelters to carry out a census, and informational modules have been set up in the municipalities that migrants usually go to. Interaction with the National Institute of Migration for necessary procedures has been constant, and assistance offices are maintained in the Secretary of Equality and Inclusion.

Herrera emphasized that, while no crisis has been presented, preparations are in place to address a potential increase in migrant flow. It is estimated that around 2,000 people request asylum in the state each year, and coordination with civil organizations, mainly led by religious groups, is expected to continue to provide humanitarian treatment to all individuals arriving in the region.
