Mexican cinema has presented a new film proposal called "Close to You," a movie that tackles deep themes such as death, depression, love, and loneliness through characters facing these realities. Director and producer Minnie West shared her experience of bringing to life a character as complex as a ghost. According to her, the film invites the audience to reflect on the ghosts we all carry within.
The film, independently shot in a record time of two and a half weeks in a single location, emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic when the world came to a halt, and the need to continue telling stories drove filmmakers to carry out the project. Director Beto Gómez highlighted the importance of exploring new ways to tell stories and offering the audience different narratives.
Minnie West, who not only stars in the film but also produces it, described the acting and physical challenge of portraying a ghost. The story of "Close to You" revolves around Leonor, West's character, and through her, explores the emotional connection we all have with loss and loneliness. The film has a melancholic and contemplative focus, inviting viewers to connect with their own deeper emotions.
Actors Pepe Barroso Silva and Mauro Sánchez Navarro also play significant roles in the film, which premieres on Friday, January 31, on the ViX platform. The plot centers on Diego Peña, an architect who, after suffering from depression due to the death of his girlfriend in a car accident, decides to remake his life and embark on a remodeling project in Mexico. The story, defined as a dark and melancholic love story, addresses themes such as loneliness, depression, and the internal struggle of characters to overcome their demons.
In "Close to You," the aim is to capture the essence of a being trapped in a place, refusing to die when their time has passed. The film is among this week's releases on ViX and aims to generate reflection on mental health, love, and personal growth. With a profound and emotional approach, the film invites the viewer to delve into the complexity of the internal ghosts we all face at some point in our lives.
