The Attorney General's Office of the State of Chihuahua reported the discovery of 56 bodies after operations that began on Tuesday, January 21, although the number was revised to 72 bodies and skeletal remains by Monday. According to a report by the international organization Human Rights Watch, nearly 5,700 clandestine graves have been discovered in Mexico, where about 53,000 human remains await identification as of the end of 2022. These figures reflect the crisis of disappearances in the country, with more than 120,000 people reported missing in total, according to the National Registry of Missing and Unidentified Persons (RNPDNO).
President Claudia Sheinbaum mentioned that authorities are investigating the discovery of 72 bodies in clandestine graves located in the community 'El Willi', in the municipality of Casas Grandes, Chihuahua, in the past week. During her morning press conference, she clarified that the Attorney General's Office of Chihuahua is responsible for conducting the investigation. When asked whether the federal government had information regarding this matter, Sheinbaum stated that they maintain contact with the authorities of Chihuahua to collaborate on the investigation. However, she noted that it is complicated to determine the identity of the human remains found in the area, as there has been speculation about the possible presence of undocumented migrants in the zone.
Such discoveries highlight the serious situation of disappearances in Mexico, demonstrating the urgent need to address this issue and provide justice for the victims of forced disappearance in the country.
