Activists Criticize Migrant Shelter in El Carmen

A social activist expressed concern about the lack of optimal conditions in El Carmen, a municipality in Nuevo León, to accommodate a large number of deportees. While municipalities like General Escobedo, García, and Santa Catarina, governed by mayors from Morena, have better infrastructure and security, El Carmen lacks the necessary conditions to adequately support these individuals.

The Alianza Real Sports Center, located in El Carmen, is being adapted as a shelter under the Mexico Embraces You program announced by President Claudia Sheinbaum. The activist emphasized that it is important to receive compatriots returning to the country with dignity, but believes that reception places should be in established cities that offer security, healthy conditions, and decent schools for those who decide to stay in Nuevo León.

Executions have been reported in the vicinity of the shelter, as well as the presence of polluting companies and neighborhoods with a lack of basic services nearby. Additionally, there is a noted lack of drainage, garbage collection, and schools in some neighborhoods of the area.

For its part, the Secretariat of Equality and Inclusion of Nuevo León has declared itself ready to receive deported migrants arriving in the state. The agency claims to be prepared to provide assistance to these individuals, although the exact number of people who might arrive is still unclear.

Representatives of neighborhoods and residents of El Carmen have requested to stop the construction of the shelter, arguing that the municipality does not meet the necessary conditions to house migrants due to issues of pollution, insecurity, and lack of basic infrastructure. It has also been pointed out that El Carmen has been in the news for negative situations in the past and questions arise regarding the choice of this location to host migrants.

Finally, it is mentioned that the state initiative Casa Monarca seeks to implement a census of migrants with the aim of providing them with benefits and support, including guidance and job opportunities for those who decide to stay in the region. Despite the challenges posed, local authorities continue to work to enable reception sites with the necessary infrastructure to accommodate deported individuals.
