Urgent Action Required After Dolphin Death in Riviera Maya

The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) has requested a dolphinarium located at the Barceló Hotel to provide documentation that validates the legality of the specimens it currently possesses. The aim is to ensure compliance with existing environmental regulations by verifying the consistency between the declared management plan, reported fatalities, registered transfers, and the traceability of the dolphins.

In the words of the federal attorney for environmental protection, Mariana Boy Tamborrell, the importance of continuing to work to enforce all relevant environmental regulations is emphasized. The required documentation includes the registration as a Property or Facility that Manages Wildlife (PIMVS); the approved and updated management plan; annual reports from 2018 to 2024, among other essential data.

The need for proper management of the dolphins is fundamental not only to ensure their welfare but also to prevent the illegal trafficking of species. In this context, the tragic news of the death of a dolphin in the Barceló Hotel dolphinarium in the Riviera Maya has been reported. The animal died after jumping and hitting itself against the concrete of the pool.

Profepa initiated the request for documentation on January 24, requiring detailed information about the death of a dolphin named Plata, as well as the authorization for the transfer of another dolphin named Alex. The deadline to submit these documents is Friday, January 31, 2025. Additionally, further information is being requested from the General Directorate of Wildlife of Semarnat for a comprehensive analysis of the situation of the Dolphinaris Barceló dolphinarium.
