The male condom remains a highly effective tool for preventing STIs, including HIV, and as a reliable contraceptive. In this context, it is essential to strengthen education about its dual function: to prevent unplanned pregnancies and to protect against diseases.
In Mexico, condoms are distributed free of charge at all health institutions. It is crucial to use them correctly to ensure their effectiveness in protecting sexual health. Dr. Guillermo Oropeza Reachi, head of the Family Planning Area at the General Hospital of Mexico 'Dr. Eduardo Liceaga,' emphasized the importance of this condom. Although it is an effective barrier against most STIs, there are diseases like syphilis and herpes that can be transmitted through direct skin contact, which partially reduces the condom's effectiveness in prevention.
Despite the obvious benefits, many people still associate condoms solely with a contraceptive method. Mexico joins this initiative with a commitment to strengthen the culture of prevention and sexual health. Oropeza Reachi stressed the importance of utilizing available resources and seeking professional guidance on the proper use of condoms. He also debunked common myths, such as reduced sensitivity, and recommended checking the expiration date and storage conditions of the condom to ensure its effectiveness.
International Condom Day, established in 2012 by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), aims to promote the responsible use of this method and facilitate access on a global scale.
