A magnitude 5.1 earthquake shook the state of Oaxaca minutes after midnight on Monday, February 17. The epicenter of the tremor was located in Juchitán de Zaragoza and it was reported at 00:07 hours, according to the National Seismological Service. Fortunately, no structural damage has been reported so far due to the low intensity of the movement, which is why the seismic alert was not activated, as explained by the Mexican Seismic Alert System.

In an incident that revives panic in Oaxaca, seven years ago, the state suffered a magnitude 7.2 earthquake on February 17, 2018, near Pinotepa Nacional. This earthquake generated more than 200 aftershocks and was felt in several states, including Guerrero, Puebla, and Mexico City. Despite the magnitude of the earthquake, no fatalities or injuries were reported.

This year marks 7 years since the earthquakes that occurred on September 7, 19, and 23, 2017, which devastated the Isthmus of Tehuantepec region with 93 fatalities and affected 140,000 people. On September 7, 2017, at 23:49 hours, the most intense earthquake of 8.2 occurred in the Gulf of Tehuantepec, affecting 41 municipalities. In total, 70,000 houses were damaged, of which 36,952 suffered total damage and 34,680 partial damage.
