Intoxication from marijuana consumption can manifest not only as an overdose but also with symptoms such as extreme anxiety, confusion, tachycardia, and loss of consciousness. In these cases, it is important to go to a Hospital Medical Unit for timely care.
The damage caused by marijuana consumption goes beyond physical effects, also affecting the mental health of consumers. Problems such as anxiety, depression, psychosis, loss of concentration, and memory can arise from the consumption of this substance. Additionally, cannabis use can irritate the respiratory pathways, causing damage comparable to that of tobacco.
Marijuana contains over 500 chemical compounds, with Tetrahydrocannabinol being the most common. This substance is responsible for psychoactive effects such as the sensation of euphoria and alterations in the perception of time, with effects varying depending on the method of consumption: inhalation, edible, or oil.
According to Hugo Aguilar Talamantes, the coordinator of Medical Programs associated with the Coordination of Mental Health and Addictions at the Mexican Institute of Social Security, health risks increase when marijuana is combined with alcohol, opioids, or sedatives. This mixture enhances the depressant effects on the central nervous system and can lead to loss of consciousness.
Dr. Aguilar Talamantes urges cannabis consumers to seek medical attention at the IMSS in case of intoxication, where the respiratory pathways will be evaluated and vital signs monitored. The staff is trained to handle cases of intoxication, following the intervention guide "Mental Health Gap Action Programme" from the World Health Organization.
