Singer Alicia Villarreal has become a topic of conversation on social media after the release of a video during one of her performances in which she made the distress signal associated with violence against women. Villarreal, married to Cruz Martínez, would be in the process of divorcing the American singer supposedly due to infidelity on his part.
During a concert at the Arena Heroica in Zitácuaro, Michoacán, on February 16, Alicia Villarreal thanked her fans and when saying goodbye to the present audience, she made the distress signal, a gesture used by women in situations of gender-based violence. This gesture, an open palm facing forward, a thumb bent towards the hand and a fist covering it, has become a universal non-verbal language to denounce violence.
According to Gustavo Adolfo Infante, the singer allegedly reported Cruz Martínez for violence against her after an incident where, according to rumors, he tried to choke her during an argument in August 2024. However, the information has not been confirmed.
In August 2024, Villarreal learned about Martínez's alleged infidelity, but at that time, she ruled out a divorce and expressed her intention to talk to him about it. In an interview in September, the singer reiterated that her music was her companion, refuge, and therapy, hinting that she was doing well despite the circumstances.
