The citizens of El Carmen demanded the partial or total suspension of the operations of the company Triturados El Roble, S.A. de C.V. due to the irreversible damage it causes to health and the environment. Rodolfo Peña, president of the civil organization Brigadas Antibaches, highlighted the need to investigate the corruption network that has allowed this company to operate to the detriment of the population for years. President Claudia Sheinbaum ordered the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) to investigate the ecological damage and health issues caused by Triturados El Roble.
In a press conference, Peña thanked Sheinbaum for her interest in addressing this demand to halt the operations of the quarry, which has affected the health of neighbors from various neighborhoods in El Carmen, Escobedo, and Monterrey. The activist proposed holding dialogue tables between the Federal Government, State Government, the company, and the municipality to establish an immediate action plan, including conducting environmental impact assessments and compensating the affected families.
Brigadas Antibaches also demanded attention to the pollution generated by the Simeprode plant on the borders of Salinas Victoria and El Carmen, which is poisoning the aquifers that supply water to thousands of families in 20 nearby neighborhoods to the solid waste landfill. The association hopes that authorities will take urgent measures to mitigate environmental damage and protect the health of the affected population.
