The National Water Commission (Conagua) explained that the drop in temperature in several states of Mexico is due to the presence of an Arctic air mass and the subtropical jet stream, which will also generate fog banks in the north, northwest, east, and center of the country. The arrival of a North wind event with gusts of 80 to 100 kilometers per hour is expected in Tamaulipas and Veracruz, while winds of 30 to 50 kilometers per hour and dust storms are forecasted in Coahuila, Nuevo León, and San Luis Potosí. Minimum temperatures of -10 to -5 degrees are expected in mountainous areas of Chihuahua, Durango, and Coahuila.
Cold front number 28 will continue to cause cold and rain across much of the Mexican territory in the coming hours, with heavy rain in states such as Puebla, Veracruz, Tabasco, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Hidalgo, Campeche, Yucatán, Querétaro, Tlaxcala, Quintana Roo, and showers in other states. Isolated rain is also expected in Nuevo León, State of Mexico, Mexico City, and Morelos. These precipitation events could be accompanied by thunderstorms and hail, which could cause landslides, puddles, and flooding in some areas.
Civil Protection authorities are urging the population to stay alert to the warnings from the National Meteorological Service, Conagua, and Civil Protection to take necessary measures in response to the rain and low temperatures. It is advised to dress warmly, stay adequately hydrated, and pay special attention to children and the elderly.
Regarding temperatures, frost of -5 to 0 degrees is expected in high areas of several states, as well as temperatures of 0 to 5 degrees in other elevated areas. To counteract the cold and rain, it is recommended to dress warmly, avoid sudden temperature changes, and especially protect the most vulnerable sectors of the population.
On the other hand, despite the cold weather, some states will continue to experience high temperatures, such as Sinaloa, Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, Guerrero, Morelos, Oaxaca, and Chiapas, where temperatures between 35 and 40 degrees are expected. In other states such as Sonora, Veracruz, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán, Quintana Roo, Durango, Zacatecas, and State of Mexico, temperatures of 30 to 35 degrees are anticipated. For areas with high temperatures, it is advised to stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and protect oneself from the sun, especially for children and the elderly.
