In Mexico, approximately 73.4% of the adult population has pets, reflecting a growing culture of care and protection for companion animals. An important part of this protection is pet insurance, which can offer coverage in cases of accidents, illnesses, and other services such as veterinary consultations via video calls, depending on the insurer.
Ricardo Rosado, vice president of individuals at the Mexican Association of Insurance and Bond Agents (Amasfac), highlights the relevance of pet insurance in covering a significant portion of veterinary expenses and allowing access to medical attention without risking the family's economy. Although there is a growing interest in this type of protection, only 7.5% of Mexicans have a medical expense policy.
It is important to note that pet insurance mainly covers dogs and cats. In addition to coverage for accidents and illnesses, some insurers also include services such as compensation for death, funeral expenses, and the option for pet cremation. Policy prices vary and can range from around 1,080 pesos to 5,300 pesos per year, depending on the plan and coverages chosen.
Companion animals play a fundamental role in many families, providing companionship, emotional support, and well-being to their owners. Although pet insurance provides important protection, it is essential to be aware that there are limitations in the coverage, such as accidents resulting from carelessness, mistreatment, or excessive exercise. Therefore, it is essential to care for and protect pets comprehensively to ensure them a full and healthy life.
