The Head of Government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, mentioned during the morning conference on Thursday, February 20, that the distribution of drugs to the United States is directly related to consumption in that country.
Sheinbaum highlighted that the congratulations received from Donald Trump is a recognition of the strategy implemented by the Fourth Transformation movement to address the causes of drug consumption in Mexico. In early January, her government relaunched the campaign 'Stay Away from Drugs, Fentanyl Kills'.
The president thanked Trump for the message, who announced a $100 million investment by the United States Government in a campaign aimed at preventing the consumption of harmful substances among children. Trump explained that resources will be allocated for advertisements about the negative effects of drugs to deter young people from using them.
Regarding the congratulations received, Sheinbaum expressed her gratitude and emphasized the importance of addressing drug trafficking while also considering consumption in the United States. Although fentanyl consumption is not a problem in Mexico, the campaign seeks to prevent a crisis similar to that experienced in U.S. and Canadian cities.
In the midst of this situation, where Trump praised Mexico's drug prevention strategy, a "tension" arose between both countries after the United States designated six Mexican cartels as terrorist organizations. In light of this situation, Sheinbaum announced the presentation of two constitutional reforms to safeguard Mexico's sovereignty against this designation.
The reforms proposed by Sheinbaum aim to strengthen the fight against criminal groups without compromising national sovereignty. The decision by the United States to classify these cartels as terrorists generated a firm response from Mexico, which seeks to protect its autonomy in the fight against organized crime.
