Innovative Renal Care for Pregnant Women in Mexico

In Mexico, the National Institute of Perinatology provides specialized nephrology care for pregnant women with renal issues, conducting over 500 dialysis sessions annually and treating high-risk pregnancies.

The National Institute of Perinatology (INPer), belonging to the Ministry of Health, has distinguished itself in Latin America by providing a specialized service in Nephrology-Obstetrics. This service focuses on caring for pregnant women with kidney diseases, being the only center in the region with this specialization.

INPer handles approximately 900 consultations related to kidney diseases in pregnancy annually, in addition to between 3,800 and 4,000 high-risk pregnancies. About 2.3 percent of these cases correspond to patients with chronic kidney disease. The service has implemented an interdisciplinary training program involving nephrologists and gynecologists, thus establishing itself as a reference point in the region.

Collaborative work with institutions such as the National Institute of Cardiology, the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition Salvador Zubirán, the General Hospital of Mexico, and the Juárez Hospital of Mexico strengthens multidisciplinary care. Thanks to government support and the Coordinating Commission of National Health Institutes and High Specialty Hospitals (CCINSHAE), it has been possible to offer hemodialysis treatments at no cost since 2020, benefiting more than 100 women treated annually.

The Nephrology-Obstetrics Service has evolved with significant advancements, such as the incorporation of on-demand hemodialysis in 2014, and promotes breastfeeding during hemodialysis sessions to strengthen the bond between mother and newborn. The aim is to expand the reach of the service through the implementation of a telemedicine unit and strengthening preconception counseling to improve access to medical care and the quality of life for more women.

INPer consolidates itself as a fundamental pillar in the public health system by performing more than 500 annual hemodialysis sessions and prioritizing women's comprehensive health during such a delicate stage as pregnancy. The highly trained team, which includes nephrologists, nutritionists, obstetricians, intensivists, psychologists, and nurses specialized in nephrology and perinatal medicine, works together to provide comprehensive and personalized care to each patient.
