A multiple collision on the Morelia-Mexico highway claimed the life of one person and led to a partial closure of the road on the night of Saturday, February 22. The incident occurred when a trailer collided with a crane that was towing a Volkswagen sedan, as well as another trailer. This caused a fire in one of the cargo vehicles and prompted the intervention of emergency teams.
One person who was in the towed sedan was trapped by the impact and died, being the only victim counted so far. Images shared on social media showed the moment of the fire following the accident, with part of one of the trailers engulfed in flames. The health status of the truck drivers and the crane involved has not yet been reported.
The event took place at kilometer 214 of the Morelia-Mexico highway, near the Zinapécuaro toll booth heading towards Cuitzeo, Michoacán. The Michoacán Attorney General's Office initiated the relevant investigations after the accident, which mobilized firefighters and emergency services to the area. During the morning of Sunday, February 23, another accident was reported in Michoacán, this time near the exit to Salamanca, where a driver lost control and collided with part of a pavilion.
Authorities ruled out injuries and stated that there were only material damages, towing the vehicle to the impound lot. It is unknown whether the driver was under the influence of any substance or if the cause of the accident was negligence, but it affected traffic on the road. In a prior incident on the same Saturday, but on the Mexico-Tuxpan highway, a multiple collision occurred on the Jorobas bridge due to dense fog, involving a tractor-trailer and three cars.
Despite the injured being treated, no fatalities were reported in this incident. The closure of traffic throughout the day caused detours and delays for the affected drivers.
