Fire at Addiction Rehabilitation Center Claims Lives

A fire in a private rehabilitation center in the Ocotla Chico neighborhood, San Miguel Topilejo, caused the death of five people and left several injured due to poisoning. Emergency services responded to the scene immediately.

The Attorney General's Office of Mexico City will investigate and determine the corresponding responsibilities. In this regard, a series of requirements must be met to open an outpatient addiction care center, which includes the submission of 17 elements by the legal representative.

Among the required documents are the voter ID, accreditation documents of legal personality, notice of operation, articles of incorporation, and RFC. Additionally, it is essential to have a document designating the person responsible for the service, a treatment that respects human rights and guarantees the physical and mental integrity of individuals, as well as the presence of a visible poster with user rights and exclusion criteria, among other aspects.

A residential care center must meet more than 30 requirements, such as the notice of operation before Cofepris, a general work program, internal regulations, technical-administrative manuals, adequate facilities and equipment, trained and sufficient personnel, family involvement programs in the rehabilitation process, and menus endorsed by a health professional. In the case of centers that exclusively serve women, both the person in charge and the manager must be women.

The center "Hombres Preparados," where the fire occurred, was not registered with the Institute for the Care and Prevention of Addictions in Mexico City, which only has 15 centers that meet the standards in the Tlalpan borough, although none are located in the San Miguel Topilejo neighborhood.
