After a fire at a rehabilitation center for addiction in Topilejo, Tlalpan, left five people dead and six injured, the Secretary of Citizen Security (SSC) of Mexico City has revealed the cause of the incident and reported eight arrests.
According to the Secretary of Integral Risk Management and Civil Protection of Mexico City, the deceased victims were men aged between 25 and 29 who were participating in rehabilitation programs at the clinic. The fire was caused by the burning of mattresses in the patients' dormitories, authorities confirmed.
As for the injured individuals, their health status is unknown and it is unclear if they are in any danger. Regarding the eight detainees, they are workers of the rehabilitation center for addiction and have been made available to the Mexico City Prosecutor's Office for the necessary investigations.
"Myriam Urzúa, head of Civil Protection of Mexico City, stated that the detained individuals are staff of the clinic and that investigations will continue to determine what triggered the fire and its consequences," said the official.
On the other hand, through an operation by the SSC, a group linked to the purchase of products with counterfeit bills in Tlalpan stores was apprehended. This group, consisting of two women and one man, was also found in possession of 220 doses of drugs and more counterfeit bills.
The investigation intensified after a report of a purchase with counterfeit bills in the San Gonzalo neighborhood, in Santa Úrsula, Tlalpan. According to authorities, the counterfeit bills used lacked the security features present in the originals, which facilitated their detection.
