Dating violence affects young people in Mexico

A study presented by the organizations Mexicanos Primero and Fundación Naná revealed that in Mexico, one in four women aged 15 to 19 who have had a partner has suffered dating violence. This figure is alarming and indicates a serious social problem that affects seven out of ten Mexican women across all age ranges. Furthermore, it is noted that 11.5% of girls and adolescents who were victims of femicide were younger than 17 years old.

The president of the Fundación Naná, Ximena Céspedes, shared the tragic story of her daughter, Ana María Serrano Céspedes, who was a victim of femicide at the age of 18 at the hands of her ex-boyfriend in September 2023. This case is the starting point of the study that aims to raise awareness about this serious issue. The report details three cyclical phases of dating violence: tension, explosion, and honeymoon, so that young women can identify it in time.

The document includes the support tool 'The Red Flags in Your Relationship', which offers teaching suggestions to detect risk behaviors in emotional relationships from the school environment. The main objective is for the educational community to act upon the first signs of violence, thus preventing more young people from becoming victims of femicide.

Patricia Vázquez, executive president of Mexicanos Primero, emphasized the urgency of detecting and preventing violence in school environments in a country where more than 10 women are murdered daily. It is essential to provide students with tools to identify violence in their personal relationships and guarantee them support networks with a human rights perspective.

The study also revealed that 32% of women aged 15 and older have suffered violence during their schooling. It is important to highlight that this research is based on official data from various agencies such as the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) and sectoral programs of the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP).
