World Organ Donation Day: A Necessary Reflection

Every February 27th, World Organ and Tissue Transplant Day is commemorated, a date aimed at raising awareness in society about the importance of organ donation and transplantation, a gesture that can save countless lives. There are two main types of treatments: induction therapy, administered intravenously in the first weeks after the transplant, and maintenance therapy, which involves the prolonged use of oral medications to ensure the survival of the graft.

Strict adherence to these treatments and periodic medical check-ups are essential for the success of the transplant and the patient’s quality of life. In Mexico, Caritas Pharma joins the effort to promote a culture of donation, emphasizing the need to engage with families about the decision to be a donor as an opportunity to give life to those on the waiting list.

In the country, challenges persist that hinder the practice of donation, such as the lack of information, distrust in institutions, and religious beliefs. According to information from the National Transplant Center (Cenatra), as of February 20, 2025, 18,807 people were awaiting a transplant in Mexico. The demand is especially high for kidney and cornea transplants, while the number of procedures performed is significantly lower, highlighting the need to promote donation to bridge this gap.

In the Mexican context, it is vital to strengthen awareness of the importance of transplants and support these processes with information and education to eliminate existing barriers. Immunosuppressive treatments, also known as anti-rejection drugs, are essential to ensure the proper functioning of the transplanted organ and to prevent rejection by the recipient's immune system.
