March 4th is World Obesity Day, and in this context, civil organizations are calling on the population to view health as a disease and not just an aesthetic issue. Specialists also warn about the risks of resorting to so-called 'miracle products' to combat obesity, as they can cause health damage and even scams.
In Mexico, according to an anonymous survey conducted by the organization 'Obesidades,' nine out of ten people have been subjected to mockery for their weight at some stage in their life, and eight out of ten have experienced discrimination. Dr. Santiago Posada, Vice President of Medical Affairs at Lilly for Latin America, emphasizes that obesity is a disease and not just an aesthetic problem, making it crucial for affected individuals to recognize this condition and seek medical help.
Obesity can trigger other serious diseases such as fatty liver, heart problems, and psychiatric disorders. Therefore, it is essential not to fall into the temptation of 'miracle products' that promise quick weight loss solutions. The inappropriate use of medications like Ozempic, originally designed to treat Type II Diabetes, can lead to irreversible health consequences, such as pancreatitis, constipation, and abdominal distension.
Dr. Fernando Pérez Galaz, a bariatric surgeon, stresses that in Mexico there are no approved drugs specifically for treating obesity, and the use of medications not indicated for this purpose can pose severe risks, including death. Although Ozempic has gained popularity as a 'weight loss' drug, its use for this purpose in healthy individuals is dangerous and not supported by health authorities.
The high obesity rate in Mexico (38.9% in adults) is alarming, with women being the most affected group. It is essential to raise awareness of obesity as a chronic and degenerative disease that requires specialized treatment. Adopting healthy habits, such as a balanced diet, exercise, and avoiding sugary beverages, is fundamental to prevent and treat obesity.
Obesity can lead to serious health problems such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, cancer, sleep apnea, and mental disorders. This disease not only affects the quality of life of those who suffer from it but also has a negative impact on the family environment. Therefore, it is crucial to address obesity as a serious disease and take appropriate preventive and therapeutic measures.
