Increase in Vehicle Theft in Nuevo León

Between February of last year and January of this year, Nuevo León recorded a 12.27% increase in the theft of insured heavy vehicles, according to AMIS.

The theft of insured heavy vehicles in Nuevo León increased by 12.27 percent from February of last year to January of this year, compared to the period from 2023 to 2024, according to the Mexican Association of Insurance Institutions (AMIS). During this time, the entity reported 536 thefts of heavy vehicles, with 51 percent of them being stolen with violence.

Nuevo León accounted for 5.6 percent of the national thefts of heavy vehicles, which totaled 9,558 units stolen. The recovery rate of these vehicles in the entity was 43 percent, an increase compared to previous periods.

Regarding insured light vehicles stolen with violence, the Kia Rio model led with 628 units stolen, representing 74.2 percent of the cases. The general director of AMIS, Norma Alicia Rosas, pointed out that the most frequently stolen vehicles with violence are the Toyota Hilux Pickup, followed by the Ford F350, F450, F550 Stake, Chassis Cab models, and the Kia Rio.

Nationally, out of 63,303 stolen vehicles, 36,527 were stolen with violence, which accounts for 57.7 percent of the total. Rosas explained that a violent theft refers to one in which the owner or driver of the vehicle is present, and she highlighted that this mode of theft has been increasing.

Among the states with the highest rates of violent theft are Sinaloa, Zacatecas, Guerrero, Tlaxcala, Chiapas, Puebla, Morelos, Tabasco, and San Luis Potosí, with rates ranging from 65 to 83 percent.
