The Secretariat of Environment and Territorial Development (Semadet) has appointed two researchers from the University of Guadalajara (UDG) to preside over the State Council on Climate Change of the State of Jalisco. Marco Antonio Berger García, from CUTlajomulco, and Eire Reynaga Delgado, who works at the University Center for Exact Sciences and Engineering (CUCEI), will serve as President and Technical Secretary of the council, respectively.
The main objective of the Council is to discuss strategies and public policies that help mitigate the impact of climate change in Jalisco. They focus on the creation of books, manuals, protocols, and training for schools and small businesses committed to caring for the environment.
According to Reynaga Delgado, it is essential to involve children in the training, as they will be the most affected by the consequences of climate change. The Council's work proposals focus on the water crisis, biodiversity, ecosystems, climate change mitigation, and air quality management.
On the other hand, Berger García emphasizes the importance of the Jalisco society's participation in environmental protection through decision-making, environmental education, and critical thinking in schools. Although Jalisco has made progress in mitigating climate change, there are still challenges in public policies to reduce environmental impact.
